Known originally as Mud Lick Springs, Olympian Springs was once one of Kentucky’s most celebrated mineral-water resorts. Named for nearby Mount Olympus, it became a refuge for Lexington residents fleeing the cholera epidemic of 1833. Soldiers gathered at the springs, and a cavalry battle was fought there during the Civil War.

Then, on March 3, 1876, pieces of red flesh began falling from a clear sky near the springs. The mysterious shower covered a section of farmland and lasted several minutes. Scientists examined samples, while two local men simply tasted the meat and declared it either venison or mutton. The true cause was never conclusively established.

The resort eventually disappeared, and modern maps often call the place Olympia Springs. What remains is the story of a forgotten Kentucky retreat beneath Mount Olympus, where the sick sought refuge, armies gathered, and meat once fell from heaven.
