Up in the Lost Creek country of Eastern Kentucky, Dice sits among hills filled with timber and coal. A generation before the community received its post office, the French-Eversole Feud had turned nearby Hazard into a battleground. The violence became serious enough that Kentucky sent state troops into Hazard in 1888. Official accounts blamed the feud for more than twenty deaths, while some later writers put the number as high as seventy-four.
